Taiwan has lifted its voluntary ban on Russian overflight, allowing China Airlines to abandon lengthy southern detours to Europe.

Taiwan has lifted its voluntary restriction on flying through Russian airspace, timed with the arrival of the IATA winter season.

The shift is already in motion. On 25 October 2026, China Airlines flight CI75 from Taipei to Rome flew almost entirely across Russia, abandoning the southern track the flight had previously been forced to take.

Taiwan's Civil Aeronautics Administration originally barred domestic carriers from the airspace following the 2022 invasion. However, Russian authorities had never formally banned Taiwanese airlines, leaving the decision to return entirely to Taiwan's regulators.
